Arts education bill signed
into law.
When
Governor Blanco signed Senate Bill 299, it became Act 175. This legislation
requires that the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education develop,
adopt, and provide for the implementation of a visual arts curriculum and a
performing arts curriculum in public schools; provide implementation timelines
and requirements; provide for the development of certain curriculum guides;
provide professional development and training; and require certain instruction
in visual arts and performing arts.
This year
the Department of Education is collaborating and consulting with the Louisiana
Division of the Arts to assemble committees of arts educators, classroom
teachers, teaching artists, administrators, and university professors to revise
the curriculum guides based on the current Louisiana Arts Content Standards.
During the 2008-2009 school year, the Department will provide professional
development regarding the new curriculum guides to teachers, school
administrators, and teaching artists. During 2009-2010 school year, selected
schools and districts will be asked to pilot the new curriculum. Beginning with
the 2010-2011 school year, all public school students in kindergarten through
grade eight shall have sixty minutes of visual and sixty minutes of performing
arts instruction each week and all public high schools will provide instruction
in the visual and performing arts.
