Barbara Clover, Denise Tullier-Holly, and Erin Willson of Louisiana were selected to receive an Award of

Excellence for their state’s YAM observance. Louisiana has been celebrating YAM for 36 years. Governor Bobby Jindal and several Louisiana Mayors and superintendents proclaimed March as Youth Art Month. They also had a 4 total of 1,112 other political and community leaders endorse March as Youth Art Month. Louisiana also used the national Youth Art Month theme, “Start with Art, Learn for Life.” Youth Art Month was celebrated in Louisiana with 321 YAM exhibits including the 13th Annual Louisiana Art Education Association (LAEA) YAM Flag Exhibit held in combination with their Artists in the Capitol Day. A total of 84 flags were displayed at the awards event that was attended by students and their families, state YAM Chairs and supporters, State Senators and Representatives. Louisiana’s First Lady, Supriya Jindal also participated in the ceremony. Louisiana’s YAM celebration also included 260 other YAM special events and activities. Among the many wonderful events across the state were Ouachita Parish Schools District’s ArtQuest - “Artists have Sole.” Included in this week-long celebration were students from each school who designed their own shoe or used a shoe to create sculptures that represented the student who created it. Eighth grade students from Caddo Middle Magnet in Shreveport were able to share their artwork with the local community by painting hot cocoa mugs on the windows of their local McDonald’s, where customers could enjoy the creative designs. Louisiana had 195 articles and over 250 pictures in newspapers featuring Youth Art Month activities. It was also reported that the number of art educators who joined LAEA in 2008 had increased by 46%. Congratulations to Barbara, Denise and Erin for holding such a successful YAM celebration!

News Release August 31, 2007

The Council for Art Education is honored to announce the 2007 Youth Art Month (YAM) award recipients. At the review of the Youth Art Month state reports in August, the Council voted to recognize the YAM Chairpersons listed below for their outstanding participation in YAM 2007.

CONGRATULATIONS TO Barbara Clover of Louisiana!

Barbara was selected to receive an Award of Excellence for her state’s observance. Barbara has been Louisiana’s YAM Chair for 4 years and a member of NAEA for 13 years. Louisiana has been celebrating YAM for 35 years. Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco proclaimed that March is YAM, while they had 1,020 other political and community leaders endorse March as YAM. Barbara reported that they had only 39 art educators that reported YAM activities, while many other teachers celebrated YAM but didn’t document their celebration. She also reported that there was a 53% increase in educators that joined LAEA. Louisiana was able to have 190 articles and 205 pictures in newspapers and 31 programs and 360 announcements on the radio and TV throughout the state. They were also able to have 307 exhibits including their LAEA Artists Capitol Day, which included their 12th Annual YAM State Capitol Youth Flag Design Exhibit in Baton Rouge. In addition, they were able to hold 253 other special events and activities. Posters, banners, t-shirts, ribbons, certificates, bulletins, calendars, newsletters and a website were developed to promote YAM. The Lt. Governor’s Art-in Education bill, State Bill 299 (Broome), was passed in June 2007, which brings music and art into every Louisiana public school. Lt. Governor Landrieu was quoted as saying, “We want to put music and the arts back in schools because research shows that when children are exposed to the arts, dropout rates go down, test scores go up, and math and science skills improve.” After the devastation that occurred during hurricane Katrina, Louisiana is getting back on track and was still able to hold a significant YAM celebration. Congratulations to Barbara and LAEA for holding such a successful YAM program.
